Novartis’ Global Health group is looking for a highly motivated and talented biologist to support a drug discovery program focusing on emerging viruses with pandemic potential and parasitic diseases. The successful candidate will work in a team lead by a Ph.D. level scientist and will be accountable for the design, execution and interpretation of biochemical and cellular assays to support the discovery and characterization of novel drug candidates.

Location: Emeryville, CA

Please note: This is a short-term contract assignment, not to exceed 6 months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and run new biochemical and cellular assays to support drug discovery efforts
  • Troubleshoot assays with minimal input from supervisor
  • Conduct mechanism of action studies
  • Liaise with various functions such as Protein Sciences and Medicinal Chemistry
  • Work with external collaborators and contract research organizations
  • Present findings at internal scientific meetings

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 2 years of experience
  • Extensive mammalian cell culture and molecular biology experience required
  • Ability to implement standard operating procedure (SOP) with minimal/no assistance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to give presentations
  • Critical reading of scientific journals and independently comes up with new SOP
  • Assist in new standard operating procedure (SOP) preparation and implementation
  • Highly collaborative within the team and across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in drug discovery industrial setting
  • Assay development experience
